“Reading is to mind, what exercise is to body”
In this era of computer and television, students have lost interest in reading books. The computer-games or television are non-stimulated in brain growth, while books help in brain development. Therefore, in formative years, we should emphasis students on reading. Researches have proven that teens who read beside curriculum are successful in their future. Many of the famous personalities have been an avid reader from a very young age in their life. These include Ann Miller, Bill Gates, Michael Collins among many others. Besides hard work and determination, there reason for some much fame and success is their interest in reading books.
The habit or reading is life-long beneficial. It tremendously motivates our way of thinking along with giving us knowledge on the varied subjects. Different kinds of books like novels, magazine, specific subject related book, etc helps in different ways. But broadly speaking, all reading books are very advantageous especially to the teens. Some of the advantageous of reading are mentioned below:-
- Vocabulary and Language Increases: Reading expands vocabulary. It also gives us a clear perspective on the word usage. By reading works of different authors, we get a clear perspective on how to put thoughts to words in a better way.
- Speech Development: With so much vocabulary, we have command over the language. And it definitely turns us into better orators.
- Easy to Clear College Prep Exams: With so good vocabulary, it becomes easy to do verbal section of college admission test. It will also definitely build their comprehension skills. Therefore, it will be pretty easy for them, to clear college admission test.
- Expand Their Horizons: Reading expands their horizons. It gives a better perspective of the world at large. Students, who read biographies, have a better understanding of prominent people in history class. Therefore, it also helps in school education. Children can also be benefited from self-help books like “Road Less Traveled” by Peter Scott. These books help students as well as adults. They offer guidelines to show how life can be made successful or how to deal with pain.
As a Parents or teacher, it’s our duty to encourage reading habits in teens. Initially, offer books on subject that interest him/her. You can also involve reading interest with other activities. Like, make him/her read the book turned into a movie, and make sure he or she sees the movie later. One of the latest books converted into movie is “Da Vinci Code”. Make him read the interesting book and then watch the movie together.
As parent make sure you reserve some time everyday, especially for reading besides curriculum books. It is very beneficial for the future of your child. So, get some good books for your kid today!
